Xan is known not only as a ‘genre agnostic’ ‘musical butterfly’ but also as someone who seeks and adores the rich learning opportunities and deep connections that collaborating with others brings.
“crystalline vocalist”
PITCHFORK
In 2021 Xan released Clarion Call on Ariwa Records with dub reggae icon Mad Professor. This was the second time the pair collaborated with the first being in 2000 when they teamed up to make A Dub Showcase which also featured a vocal cameo from the late great Lee Scratch Perry.
“Extraordinary”
UNCUT
2020 Let It Come Down was the name given to Xan’s collaboration with Shimmy Disc legend Kramer who previously produced the likes of Galaxie 500, Low and Daniel Johnston. Their album, released by cult US label Joyful Noise, was called Songs We Sang In Our Dreams and Pitchfork gave it an uncharacteristically high 7.7 rating.
“Tyler is a perfect foil … delivering precise, roving melodies that play off the structure provided by Kramer’s acoustic guitar and piano chords.”
PITCHFORK
In 2016 Xan made We Are The Light And The Dark with David Liddell under the moniker Glasshouse.
“A clean ethereal clarity… peerless.”
CONTACT MUSIC
Alongside more recent projects Xan has worked with dance music producers Timo Maas and Martin Buttrich, folk artists Naomi Bedford and Paul Simmons. Xan was also one half of synth-pop duo Technique signed to Alan McGee’s Creation Records. Xan has appeared on a host of record labels including Platipus, Ministry and Poptones.
It wasn’t until 2024 that Xan finally made her debut solo record Holding Up Half The Sky released on Last Night From Glasgow, reached number 4 in the Scottish Albums Chart. Inspired by stories of female empowerment and exploring themes of sisterhood, survival and aging (some real, some imagined but all personal) the reception it received was far reaching and surprised even Xan.
“Eloquent and spellbinding storytelling.”
THE GINGER QUIFF
Plays from 6 Music, BBC Radio Scotland, X Radio and others were followed by many exciting live bookings including her Celtic Connections debut, an appearance at back Doune The Rabbit Hole Festival, a support slot with Peter Capaldi and a tour with The Blow Monkeys among the highlights.
“Soulful, beautiful, crystalline voice.”
THE SCOTSMAN
HUHTS was produced by Boo Hewerdine (also co-writer on some songs) and recorded by Jamie Savage at Chem-19. The album featured a host of amazing artists including, Louis Abbott (Admiral Fallow) on drums , Adam Scott (Album Club) on bass, John Rooney (Starry Skies) lead guitar, Emma Pollock (The Delgados) guest vocals, violist John McCusker, cellist Pete Harvey and Swedish multi-instrumentalist Gustaf Ljunggren.
“Her tender croons infuse a beautiful depth of humanity.”
EARMILK
Xan’s latest offering is Home is another collaboration. This time she has paired up with Amsterdam based Texan Dusty Stray. Reaching number 8 in the Scottish Albums Chart, Home is a collection of ten songs that explore the emotional terrain of endings and beginnings. Inspired by ideas of place, belonging, loss, and renewal, the album is as much about inner landscapes as physical relationships.
2026 sees Xan touring both with Dusty Stray as well as solo but also begins work on her follow-up to Holding Up Half The Sky.
